What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui (风水, “wind and water”), also called Kan Yu (堪舆), is the traditional Chinese study of choosing and arranging environments so that people live in harmony with the energy of their surroundings. It has two main branches: Yang Zhai for homes and other dwellings of the living, and Yin Zhai for burial sites.

One Breath focuses on Yang Zhai — the Feng Shui of the home — because it is what most people can act on in daily life: where to sit, where to sleep, where the entrance faces, and how a room is arranged.

How the analysis works

The analysis starts from the Eight Mansions (八宅) school. From your birth year and gender, your Life Gua (命卦) is calculated, placing you in either the East Group or the West Group. Each Life Gua has four favourable and four unfavourable directions, which can be compared with the facing of your home and the positions of the door, bed and desk.

Classical Yang Zhai theory also stresses three essentials — the door, the main room and the stove — as described in Yang Zhai San Yao. On One Breath you can optionally upload a photo, and the AI adds a visual assessment of the space to the directional analysis before giving concrete layout suggestions.

Classical texts behind this reading

Feng Shui readings draw on four texts in One Breath’s Feng Shui collection. The passages most relevant to your situation are retrieved and cited by name.

Passages from the Classics

仰以觀於天文,俯以察於地理,是故知幽明之故。
— Zhou Yi, Xi Ci I 《周易·系辞上》
Looking up, they contemplated the patterns of Heaven; looking down, they examined the patterns of the Earth, and so understood the causes of the hidden and the manifest.
在天成象,在地成形,變化見矣。
— Zhou Yi, Xi Ci I 《周易·系辞上》
In Heaven images are formed, on Earth shapes are formed, and transformation becomes visible.

Why One Breath

Unlike a generic AI chatbot, One Breath uses retrieval-augmented generation: before each reading it searches 20,020 passages from 38 classical texts for the material most relevant to your question, and the AI then combines that classical knowledge with your own details. Every classical text cited in your reading is shown by name, so the analysis can be traced back to its sources.

All One Breath features are currently free, with daily usage limits; detailed paid reports will be added later. The site works in English and Chinese, on desktop and mobile, with nothing to install.
