What is date selection?

Ze Ri (择日), date selection, is the Chinese tradition of choosing the best day for important events: marriage, opening a business, breaking ground, moving house, travelling and more. It reflects a basic idea of Chinese thought — that time itself has quality, and acting in harmony with the right time makes success easier.

The familiar Chinese almanac (通书 / 黄历), with its daily lists of activities that are favourable (宜) and to be avoided (忌), is the everyday form of this tradition.

How auspicious dates are chosen

Each day carries a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch and falls within a solar term. Date selection evaluates these against systems such as the Twelve Day Officers (建除十二神), auspicious and inauspicious stars, and clashes with particular zodiac animals. A day suitable for a wedding may not be suitable for construction, so the purpose always matters.

On One Breath you choose the kind of event and a date range. The system retrieves the relevant rules from the Xiang Ji Tong Shu and suggests favourable dates, explaining what each day is good for and what to avoid. Where helpful, your birth chart can be considered so that the chosen day does not clash with you.

Passages from the Classics

變通莫大乎四時,縣象著明莫大乎日月。
— Zhou Yi, Xi Ci I 《周易·系辞上》
Of things that change and flow, none is greater than the four seasons; of images hung on high and shining bright, none is greater than the sun and moon.
先天而天弗違,後天而奉天時。
— Zhou Yi, Qian, Wen Yan commentary 《周易·乾·文言》
Acting before Heaven, Heaven does not oppose him; acting after Heaven, he follows the timing of Heaven.
時止則止,時行則行,動靜不失其時,其道光明。
— Zhou Yi, Gen, Tuan commentary 《周易·艮·彖传》
When it is time to stop, stop; when it is time to move, move. Moving and resting without missing the right time, the way is bright.

Why One Breath

Unlike a generic AI chatbot, One Breath uses retrieval-augmented generation: before each reading it searches 20,020 passages from 38 classical texts for the material most relevant to your question, and the AI then combines that classical knowledge with your own details. Every classical text cited in your reading is shown by name, so the analysis can be traced back to its sources.

All One Breath features are currently free, with daily usage limits; detailed paid reports will be added later. The site works in English and Chinese, on desktop and mobile, with nothing to install.
